March 15 is World Sleep Day!
We all know sleep is essential to health. Through this opportunity, Wellell would like to promote the conscious of sleep health alongside the health professionals and advocates.
The most common type of sleep-disordered breathing, Obstructive Sleep Apnea (#OSA), leads to poor sleep quality. It affects over 14% of the global population (1 billion people) (Lyons MM et, al. 2020). Severe sleep disorders raise the patient's risk of all-cause mortality by 3-folds, significantly increasing the chance of chronic and severe health complications and early death. (Young T et, al. 2008)
As for solution, there are 3 main treatment strategies for OSA:
1. Lifestyle Changes
-Weight management and active lifestyle
-Quit smoking
-Limit alcohol intake
2. Therapies
-Continuous positive airway pressure (#CPAP)
-Oral appliance therapy
-Positional therapy (sleep on the side)
3. Surgery and other procedures7
-Uvulopalatopharyngoplasty/ UPPP
-Maxillomandibular advancement
